Solution

The First war of Indian Independence in fact started and popularised by the Sepoys in the British army. There were many reasons why the Sepoys revolted

1. They were unhappy with the pay and allowances in the British army. The Sepoys were paid meagre salaries while their British counterparts were paid higher.

2. At that time, Hindus believed that crossing the sea would make them outcasts and thus refused to serve in Burma. They agreed to go by the land route which the British generals did not approve.

3. The soldiers were angered by the general situation in the countryside like the high taxes in form of revenue.

4. Word spread that the British wished to introduce Enfield cartridges that were greased with the fat from cow and pig which hurt the sentiments of Hindu as well as Muslim Sepoys, who rebelled together against the use of these greased cartridges.

5. The Sepoys in Barrackpore rebelled against this and planned to spread the rebellion in all the other units of the British army. They planned to overthrow the handful of British soldiers by sheer strength of numbers.

Since the first was of Indian Independence was started and carried forward by the Sepoys of the British army, the British called this movement a mutiny, thus it came to be known as Sepoy Mutiny.
