Question

why halogens are coloured and other elements are not coloured.

Open in App
Solution

When halogen atoms absorb radiation, the valence electron gets excited to higher energy levels. This electron jumps back to the lower energy level and emits radiation in the visible region, imparting colour to the halogens. Since, different halogen atoms absorb and emit different radiations, the colour of each halogen is different from the other.
