Question

Why hybrid orbitals are more stable than pure atomic orbitals?

Open in App
Solution

In pure orbitals there is a difference in energy levels e.g s orbital has lower energy than p orbital,
However in case of hybrid orbitals all the hybrid orbitals have the same energy i.e. when one 's' and three 'p' orbitals mic the resulting four sp3 orbitals have the same energy and hence are more stable.
