In North India, Saccharum barberi was originally grown which had poor sugar content and yield. Saccharum officinarum had high yield and high sugar content but didn't grow well in North India These two species were crossed to obtain sugarcane crop of good, desirable qualities that can be grown in North India. In this way, plant breeding technique helped the sugar industry in North India.
