(a) Name natural polymer and synthetic polymer.
(b) Distinguish between thermoplastic and thermosetting polymers with examples.

Solution

a) Natural polymers: The polymers obtained naturally are called natural polymers. A natural polymes are obtained from plants and animals. Starch, cellulose, proteins, natural rubber etc. are the examples of natural polymers.

Synthetic polymers: These are man-made polymers or the polymers which are synthesized in the laboratory are called Synthetic polymers. Examples of synthetic polymers are polyethylene, polyvinyl chloride, nylon, synthetic rubbers.

b) Thermoplastic polymer can be melted and reshaped again and again. These are addition polymers while thermosetting plastics can only be heated and shaped once. Items made from thermoplastics can easily deform when they are exposed to heat, while those that are made of thermosetting plastics cannot.
