Solution

The correct option is C
3 only
Statement 1 is correct:
Hypoxia is the situation when algae and other marine organisms die because of lack of oxygen. Thus, ‘Dead zones’ are the areas in the world’s oceans and lakes with low-oxygen, or hypoxic conditions. As most organisms need oxygen to survive, and in the absence of oxygen they die. Thus, these regions are called dead zones.

Statement 2 is correct:
Eutrophication is a process of a body of water getting too many nutrients, like phosphorus and nitrogen. High rate of these nutrients in a water body feed the uncontrollable growth of cyanobacteria, or blue-green algae, resulting in algal blooms, which can be harmful. Algal blooms prevent penetration of light in the surface of the water, and also prevent absorption of oxygen by organisms beneath them. Thus, causing a situation of hypoxia. Therefore, dead zones are caused by eutrophication.

Statement 3 is incorrect:
Dead Zones are found across the world. The Arabain sea has the largest dead zone in the world, and the Gulf of Mexico has the second largest dead zone of the world.
