Mangroves are trees or large shrubs which are salt-tolerant and grow in intertidal zones in tropical and subtropical regions. They form dense forests along many tropical and subtropical coasts. India has a long tradition of mangrove forest management. The Sundarban mangroves, located in the Bay of Bengal (partly in India and partly in Bangladesh), were the first mangroves in the world to be put under scientific management.
In World’s total mangrove vegetation, India’s share stands at 3%. Currently Mangrove cover in India is 4975 km² which is 0.15 % of the country’s geographical area. Sundarbans in West Bengal accounts for almost half of the total area. As compared to 2017 there is a net increase of 54 sq km in the mangrove cover.
