Q. With reference to Katchatheevu Island which of the following statements are correct?
Select the correct answer using the code below
Statement 1 is correct: Katchatheevu Island is an uninhabited island in the Palk Strait.
Statement 2 is correct: Until 1974, it was a disputed territory between India and Sri Lanka. In 1974, Katchatheevu was ceded to Sri Lanka by India through the Indo-Sri Lankan Maritime agreement to settle the maritime boundary.
Statement 3 is correct: The 1974 agreement, which did not specify fishing rights, allowed Indian fishermen to fish around Katchatheevu and to dry their nets on the island.
But in 1976 another agreement, with the establishment of the Exclusive Economic Zones by the two countries, restricted both the countries’ fishermen from fishing in the other’s waters.
Indian Fishermen from Tamil Nadu claim their traditional right on the island and while fishing when they cross boundaries they are arrested by Sri Lankan authorities. Tamil Nadu government has supported this claim in the past and had moved to the Supreme Court for nullifying the 1974 and 1976 agreements.
