Q. With reference to the Kalabhras revolt, consider the following statements:
Which of the statements given above is/are correct?
Explanation:
Only statements 1 and 2 are correct.
The Kalabhra revolt started in 250 AD and lasted till 690 AD. During this period the Kalabhras came together in large numbers and revolted against the Chola, Pandyan, Cheras, and Pallavas.
The Kalabhras were possibly Jains and Buddhists. They spoke Tamil and Prakrit languages. They established their capital which was previously under Chola’s rule. When they came into power they executed Brahmins on a large scale, put a ban on the custom of granting lands to the Brahmins (Brahmadeya), and collecting taxes from villages to run the temple affairs. The Kalabhras were called ‘Evil people’ by the citizens of Chola, Pandyan kingdoms because of their barbaric attitude towards Brahmins and nobles of the Royal family.
It is significant that the Kalabhras revolt could be put down only through the joint efforts of the Pandyas, the Pallavas, and the Chalukyas of Badami. Hence statement 3 is incorrect.
