In a mathematics test, the following marks were obtained by 40 students. Arrange these marks on a table using tally marks.

How many students obtained marks below 4?

Although the table above contains a large volume of data, we can classify them under specific values for the simplicity of representation.If you take a close look at the values of the table above, you will find a repetition of particular values quite a few times.We use their repetitions to construct a tally table as shown below (e.g. 2 students got 1 mark, 3 students got 2 marks and so on).

The number 1 is represented as I. The number 2 is represented as II and so on. But number 5 is represented as ​​​​

No of students who obtained marks below 4 = No of students who obtained 1 mark + No of students who obtained 2 marks + No of students who obtained 3 marks

= 2 + 3 + 3 = 8 .

So, Eight students obtained marks below 4.
