Rakesh goes to a departmental store and purchases the following articles:

i) Biscuits and bakery products costing Rs. 50, VAT @ $5\%$

ii) Medicines costing Rs. 90 VAT @ $10\%$

iii) Clothes costing Rs. 400, VAT @ $1\%$ and

iv) Cosmetics costing Rs. 150, VAT @ $10\%$

Calculate the total amount to be paid by Rakesh to the store.

Answer 1

i) Cost of biscuits and bakery product = Rs. 50
VAT $=5\%$
$\therefore$ Total cost $=Rs.\frac{50\times (100+5)}{100}$
$=Rs.\frac{50\times 105}{100}=Rs.52.50$

ii) Cost of medicines = Rs. 90
VAT $=10\%$
$\therefore$ Total cost $=Rs.\frac{90\times (100+10)}{100}$
$=Rs.\frac{90\times 110}{100}=Rs.99$

iii) Cost of clothes = Rs. 400
VAT $=1\%$
$\therefore$ Total cost $=Rs.\frac{400\times (100+1)}{100}$
$=Rs.\frac{400\times 101}{100}=Rs.404$

iv) Cost of cosmetics = Rs. 150
VAT $=10\%$
$\therefore$ Total cost $=Rs.\frac{150\times (100+10)}{100}$
$=Rs.\frac{150\times 110}{100}=Rs.165$
$\therefore$ Total amount of the bill
= Rs. 52.50 + Rs. 99 + Rs. 404 + Rs. 165
= Rs. 720.50
