Question

Ram's gardener is not dependable. The probability that he will forget to water the rose bush is 23. The rose bush is in questionable condition anyhow if watered the probability of its withering is 12, if not watered, the probability of its withering is 34. Ram went out of the station and upon returning, he finds that the rosebush has withered. The probability that the gardener did not water the bush is?

Solution

The correct option is C

34

Explanation for the correct option:

Let A be the event where ram's gardener forgot to water the rose bush

Let B be the event where ram's gardener watered the rose bush

Let C be the event where the rose bush withered

Given:

P(A)=23

P(C|B)=12

P(C|A)=34 So,

P(B)=1-P(A)

=1-23=13

To find: P(A|C)

By Bayes theorem:

P(A|C)=P(C|A).P(A)P(C) …….(i)

we need to find P(C)

by using the law of total probability which states that if Bn are pairwise disjoint events then for any event A of the same probability space:

P(A)=nP(A|Bn).P(Bn)

therefore

P(C)=P(C|A).P(A)+P(C|B).P(B)

=(34)(23)+(12)(13)

=23

we know from (i) that:

P(A|C)=P(C|A).P(A)P(C)

substituting the values

P(A|C)=(34)(23)23

=34

Hence, option (C) is the correct answer
