Question

Ramu has an element X with an Atomic Number of 13, while Somu has an element Y with an Atomic Number of 16. If Ramu and Somu mix those elements and heat it, a new compound of Z is formed.
Keeping this mind and answer the following question.
i) Write the electronic configuration of X.
ii) Write the electronic configuration of Y.
iii) Which one is a metal and which is a non-metal?
iv) What is the valency of X?
v) What is the valency of Y?
vi) Write the formula of Z.

Solution

(i) X(13):1s22s22p63s23p1
(ii) Y(16):1s22s22p63s23p4
(iii) X can lose electron to gain noble gas configuration, similarly Y can accept 2 electrons. Hence X is electropositive and Y is electronegative. Therefore X is a metal and Y is non-metal.
(iv) X can loose 3 electrons to gain noble gas configuration. Hence its valency is +3.
(v) Y can accept 2 electrons to gain noble gas configuration. Hence its valency is 2.
(vi) Combination of X3+ and Y2 will be Z which is X2Y3.
