PASSAGE 1

Bertrand Russell, who was a firm atheist, was once asked what he would do if, following his death, he were to encounter God after all. Russell is supposed to have answered, “I will ask him: God Almighty, why did you give so little evidence of your existence?” Certainly appalling world in which we live does not—at least on the surface—look like one in which an all-powerful benevolence is having its way. It is hard to understand how a compassionate world order can include so many people afflicted by acute misery, persistent hunger and deprived and desperate lives, and why millions of innocent children have to die each year from lack of food or medical attention or social care.

This issue, of course, is not new, and it has been a subject of some discussion among theologians. The argument that God has reasons to want us to deal with these matters ourselves has had considerable intellectual support. As a nonreligious person, I am not in a position to assess the theological merits of this argument. But I can appreciate the force of the claim that people themselves must have the responsibility for the development and change of the world in which they live. One does not have to be either devout or non-devout to accept this basic connection. As people who live—in a broad sense—together, we cannot escape the thought that the terrible occurrences that we see around us are quintessentially our problems. They are our responsibility—whether or not they are also anyone else’s.

Q63. What is the essential message of the passage?

A

(a) It is hard to justify the existence of an all powerful benevolence given the level of misery in this world.

Solution

The correct option is B

(b) People should take responsibility for various terrible occurrences around them and not just blame God for these.

Paragraph 1 argues existence of an all powerful benevolence does not seem likely given the level of misery in this world. But paragraph 2 refute this and argue that existence of misery does not prove anything about the existence of God. It suggests that God may have reasons to want us to deal with these matters ourselves. It further says that as people who live—in a broad sense—together, we cannot escape the thought that the terrible occurrences that we see around us are quintessentially our problems. They are our responsibility—whether or not they are also anyone else‘s. Thus the essential message of the passage is that we should take responsibility for these problems.

Q. Read the following passage and answer the given question.

As Lisa Morton notes in Calling the Spirits: A History of Seances, there is not a shred of scientific evidence that proves the existence of spirits or any ability on our part or theirs, if they did exist, that we can communicate with them. Despite this, there is hardly a culture or people on earth that has not or does not believe in a spiritual life of some sort after death and that does not have some sort of ritual conducted by a “specialist” to communicate with the dead. Human beings are convinced, and have been throughout history, that there is an afterlife, that death is not the end but simply a gateway to more life, and that this afterlife has some profound effect upon those still living this life. What this pervasive belief shows is:Calling the Spirits is a nifty survey of the western world’s supposed interactions with the spirits of the dead. Necromancy, the art of summoning the spirits, has long fascinated us, and it was common in the ancient world for those with special gifts of some sort to summon the dead or the gods (good, bad, and trickster) or demi-gods, the halfway house between mortal and immortal. I suppose that Jesus would not be considered a necromancer for calling out the evil spirits of the possessed, but he clearly could get spirits to obey his commands. Although Jesus raised the dead, he did not commune with the spirits of the dead or make a claim that they had an active influence on the living. In the ancient world, people summoned the dead to get predictions about the future; presumably the dead, not imprisoned by time, are able to see the past, the present, and the future simultaneously. And they, despite being dead, are still concerned with what goes on among the living.

Which of the following statements can be inferred from the passage?

PASSAGE 4

To most, ‘Education’ simply connotes a process of facilitating learning or the acquisition of knowledge and skills. Often, we do not lay enough emphasis on values, beliefs, wisdom and habits, which are core to a good education. Good, well-rounded education should help to bring lasting positive changes in human life and behavior, so that we can contribute to society in a meaningful and positive way. To create unity and justice for all.

Albert Einstein during his visit to Boston in 1921, while commenting on college education stated, “Education is not the learning of facts, but the training of minds to think.” He argued, that in order to learn facts, a person does not really need a school or college education. The value of a school or college education is to train the mind to think something that cannot be learned from textbooks, it is to create the capacity of integrated understanding and an ability to use the knowledge intelligently. These are fundamental aspects of the ethos of education that we continue to aspire for even today.

Education is the catalyst that can help reduce poverty, improve health, prevent needless deaths & illness, eliminate gender inequality and create a sustainable planet. For societies, education drives long-term economic growth, spurs innovation, strengthens institutions, and fosters social cohesion. Education gives people the skills they need to help themselves out of poverty. As per a UN study, there is a 9% increase in hourly earnings for every one extra year of schooling. In many cases expanding access to education is in fact a matter of life and death. A mother who can read is able to better protect her children from chronic illnesses and from dying young. As per UN estimates, in the developing world, a child born to a mother who can read is 50% more likely to survive past age five.

As far as India is concerned, we are proud of the fact that India has youth on her side while the world is aging. By the end of this decade, the average age of the Indian population will be 29. As a result of India’s “demographic dividend”, by 2040, India will account for a quarter of the globe’s incremental increase in working population. Our present workforce (the 15-64 age group) comprises 430 million people. In the next 20 years, India will add another 480 million people to its existing workforce.

Q. Consider the following statements

1. Provision of unity and justice in society will result in accessibility of education for all.
2. According to Albert Einstein, a person does not really need a school or college education.
3. One among the best ways to bring people out of poverty is to educate them so that they gain skill to help themselves out.

Which of the statements given above is/are correct?
