  • Some parts of DNA are loosely packed and stains lightly. That region of chromatin is called euchromatin. This region is transcriptionally active.
  • Whereas some parts of the chromatin are packed densely and darkly stained, those regions are called heterochromatin. They are transcriptionally inactive.
  • The histones are positively charged proteins due to the presence of arginine and lysine amino acid residues.
  • These histones are organised to form a unit of eight molecules called histone octamer and wrap negatively charged DNA. The structure formed is called a nucleosome.
  • These nucleosomes constitute the repeating unit of a structure in the nucleus called chromatin.
