Solution

The correct option is B Statement 1 is correct while statement 2 is incorrect
In India, the Air (Prevention and Control of Pollution) Act came into force in 1981to control and prevent air pollution in India. It was amended in 1987 to include noise as an air pollutant. This was the first attempt by the government of India to combat air pollution.

According to the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB), particulates of size 2.5 micrometers or lesser in diameter (PM 2.5) are responsible for causing the greatest harm to human health. These fine particulates can be inhaled deep into the lungs and can cause breathing and respiratory symptoms, irritation, inflammations and damage to the lungs and premature deaths. Thus statement 1 is correct whereas statement 2 is incorrect.
