Question

Recent reports of acid rain in big industrial cities are due to the effect of atmospheric pollution by
  1. excessive release of NH3 by coal gas/ industries
  2. more release of NO2 and SO2 by burning of fossil fuels
  3. more release of CO2 by burning of coal/wood cutting of forests and increasing population
  4. excessive release of CO by incomplete combustion of carbonaceous fuels

Solution

The correct option is B more release of NO2 and SO2 by burning of fossil fuels

Acid rain results when sulphur dioxide (SO2) and nitrogen oxides (NOx) are emitted into the atmosphere and transported by wind and air currents. The SO2 and NOx react with water, oxygen and other chemicals to form sulphuric and nitric acids. These then mix with water and fall to the ground as acid rain.
