Question

Ritu can row downstream 20 km in 2 hours and upstream 4 km in 2 hours. Find her speed of rowing in still water and the speed of the current.


Solution

Let the speed of Ritu in still water = x km/hr
Let the speed of Ritu in water current = y km/hr
In downstream the effective speed = (x+y) km/hr
In upstream the effective speed = (x-y) km/hr
(x+y)×2hr=20 kmx+y=10   ...(1)
(xy)×2=4
xy=2 ...(2)
Adding (1) and (2)
x+/y+x/y=10+2=12
2x=12x=6 km/hr
From (2)
xy=2
or y=x2=62=4 km/hr
Ritu's speed in still water = 6 km/hr
Ritu's speed of currect = 4 km/hr
