In 1895, Sun Yat-sen took part in an uprising against the Manchus, but, this attempt failed and he fled from China. He travelled overseas and introduced Nationalism to the Chinese students. In 1905, he founded a political party in Tokyo which later became the Kuomintang or the National People’s Party in 1912. Nationalism, democracy and socialism were the three guiding principles of Sun Yat-sen. Yuan Shih-kai became the first president of the Republic of China.
