Let x and y be the ten’s and unit’s digits respectively of the numeral denoting the Shakuntal’s age. Then, Shakuntla’s age = (10x + Y) years;
Husband’s age = (10y + x) years.
As we know, that difference between their ages is one-eleventh of their sum.
So, we get,
(10y + x) – (10x – y) = (10y + x + 10x + y)
(9y – 9x) = (11x + 11y)
10x = 8y
Þ x < y
Clearly, y should be a single digit which multiplied by 8 becomes a multiple of 10.
So, x = 4, y = 5.
Hence, Shakuntla’s age = 10x + y = 45 years.
Hence, option (c) is the correct answer.
