SO2 is released into the atmosphere as a result of burning of fossil fuels.

It is also released from the smelting and roasting of sulphide ores.

The emission of SO2 can be reduced by using other forms of energy such as solar energy, nuclear energy and hydroelectric energy.

Fuels containing sulphur are desulphonated before burning by FGD.

When wter is used at high pressure, it will dissolve SO2 which in turn reduced the pH of the soil. Thus the fertility of the soil is reduced.
