Solve the simultaneous equations:
$x + 2 y = 7$
$2 x + 3 y = 8$

Solution

$x + 2 y = 7$ _ (i)

$2 x + 3 y = 8$ _ (ii)

Multiply (i) by 2

$2 x + 4 y = 14$ ___ (iii)

$2 x + 3 y = 8$

Subtracting (ii) from (iii)

$y = 6$

Substituting y in (i)

$x = - 5$
