Question

State the reaction occurring at the anode during electrolysis of :
Copper sulphate solution using a platinum anode.

Open in App
Solution

The process of dissolving ionic compounds into their constituent components by delivering a direct electric current through the complex in a fluid form is known as electrolysis.

At the cathode, cations are reduced, whereas anions are oxidized.

An electrolyte, electrodes, and some type of external power source are necessary for conducting electrolysis

At cathode: Cu2+(aq)+2e-→Cu(s)

At anode: 4OH-(aq)→O2(g)+H2O(l)+4e-

When Copper sulphate solution uses a platinum anode, the Hydroxyl ions discharge in preference to sulphate ions.
