An ionic bond is formed between a positive and negative ion by the complete transfer of an electron between the two atoms. This is also called an electrostatic bond as there is a strong electrostatic force of attraction between the atoms. They form a lattice structure which is hard to break. However, covalent bonds have Van der Waals forces between their atoms which are weaker than ionic forces.
