Question

State your observations when

(a) Washing soda crystals

(b) Iron (III) chloride salts are exposed to atmosphere.

Solution

i) When washing soda (Na2CO3
.10H2O) are exposed to air, they lose nine molecules of water of
crystallization and form a monohydrate.
Na2CO3
.10H2O --> Na2CO3
.H2O +9H2O

ii) It absorbs moisture from the atmosphere to become moist and ultimately dissolves in the absorbed
water, forming a saturated solution.
