Solution

The correct option is A Both statement 1 and statement 2 are true and statement 2 is a consequence of statement 1.
The Chinese Communist Party defeated Japan in 1945. The Communist party then occupied those areas of China from where Japan retreated. The party garnered more popularity when it announced ‘Land Reforms’ in all these places. According to the land reforms, lands were redistributed to the farmers so that they no longer had to work under landlords who exploited them. Thus, more areas came under the control of the party even though some were still under the control of Chiang Kai-shek. By 1949, most of the cities came under the control of the communist party. Following this, Chiang Kai-shek had to run away to Taiwan.
