The chemical formula of water is H2O. During its electrolysis, hydrogen and oxygen gases are collected at cathode and anode respectively.

The volume of hydrogen gas collected at cathode is double the volume of the oxygen gas collected at the anode which is according to the following reaction:

2H2O (l) 2H2(g) + O2(g)
