Statement 1 is true, but not statement 2. The Palas lost to the Gurjara-Pratiharas at the battle fought at Pala capital of Pataliputra. Kannauj was the symbol of power and prestige during the early medieval period. Control of Kannuj meant access to the silk route, and also access to the fertile Gangetic plain. There were three dynasties which fought for control of Kannauj, for two centuries. This was called the Kannauj-tripartite struggle. The three dynasties involved in this struggle were the Gurjara-Pratiharas, the Rashtrakutas, and the Palas.
