Question

Statement I : A cyclist is moving on an unbanked road with a speed of 7 kmh1 and takes a sharp circular turn along a path of radius of 2 m without reducing the speed. The static friction coefficient is 0.2. The cyclist will not slip and pass the curve.
(g=10 m/s2)

Statement II : If the road is banked at an angle of 45, cyclist can cross the curve of 2 m radius with the speed of 15 kmh1 without slipping.

In the light of the above statements, choose the correct answer from the options given below.

Solution

The correct option is D Both statement I and statement II are true
Statement 1 :
On a horizontal ground,
Vmax=μRg=0.2×2×10=2 m/s=2×185
= 7.2 km/h > given velocity.
Hence, it can turn safely.

Statement - 2 :
Given, θ=45 tanθ=tan45=1
Also, Vmax=gr(tanθ+μ1μtanθ)=(2×10×1.20.8)×185=19.72 km/h

And, Vmin=rg(tanθμ1+μtanθ)=(2×10×0.81.2)×185=13.14 km/h

Since, given velocity is between Vmax and Vmin, cyclist can safely turn.
