Corrosion is the gradual degradation of metallic objects in the presence of various substances present in the atmosphere like oxygen, moisture, etc.

E.g. Iron on continuous exposure to moisture and oxygen forms a reddish brown layer (iron oxide) on its surface. This is called rusting of iron.

To prevent corrosion, iron articles are covered with a thin layer of zinc. This process is known as galvanisation. Zinc forms a thick layer of zinc oxide when it comes in contact with air. Thus, it prevents rusting of iron as iron does not come in contact of air and water.
