Root is the plant part that is formed from the radicle of the germinating seed. It can be of three main types - tap root, fibrous root and adventitious root.

Tap root is formed by the direct elongation of the radicle and results in the formation of the primary root. Secondary and tertiary roots which are considered as lateral roots, arise from the tap root. It is seen in dicot plants such as mustard and banyan.
