Question

If the remainder of p(x)=3x+7 when divided by x+8 is the zero of the polynomial q(x)=2xa,then what is the value of a?

  1. 34
  2. -17
  3. -34
  4. 17

Solution

The correct option is C -34
By remainder theorem, we know thatif a polynomial f(x) is divided by (x - a), the remainder obtained is f(a).

From remainder theorem, when p(x)is divided with x+8,the remainder is p(8).
x+8=0x=(8)

p(8)=3(8)+7=17

Given -17 is a zero of q(x)=2xa
q(17)=0
  2(17)a=0
  a=34
