The apparatus shown below can be used to obtain pure water from salt water.
(a) Label the diagram from i to vi.
(b) Why is it necessary to use the ice?
(c) Describe how this method works.
(d) What is this method of separation called?
(a) i- distilling flask, ii- salt solution, iii- cork, iv- ice, v- condenser beaker, vi- pure water.
(b) Using ice is important to condense the water.
(c) The salt solution is heated in the flask till it boils and steam rises up. The steam then passes through the condenser and solute is left behind in the beaker. Steam is condensed in the beaker and pure water is collected.
(d) This is called distillation.
