Let the cost of a pencil be $Rs.y$

$2x+3y=17$ Blue line

$3x+4y=24$ Red line

Corresponding graph is shown in the attached figure. From the graph, it can be seen the solution is $x=4,y=3$.

Hence, the cost of exercise book is $Rs.4$ and that of a pencil is $Rs.3$.
