Question

The figure represents a closed cycle for the gas. The change in internal energy of the gas as it moves from a to c along path abc is 200 J. As it moves from c to d, 180 J must be transferred to it as heat, An additional transfer of 80 J to it as heat is needed, as it moves from d to a. How much work is done on the gas as it moves from c to d ?

  1. 60 J
  2. 50 J
  3. 30 J
  4. 80 J

Solution

The correct option is A 60 J
Along process d a, work done = 0 J
Qda=ΔUda=+80 J
and for cyclic process abcda, we can write that,
ΔUac+ΔUcd+ΔUda=0
200 J+ΔUcd+80 J=0
ΔUcd=+120 J
Using first law of thermodynamics, we can say that
Wcd=QcdΔUcd
Wcd=+180 J120 J
Wcd=+60 J
Hence, option (a) is the correct answer.
