Question

The gas obtained by heating sulphur powder in air is dissolved in water and the resulting solution is reacted with litmus solution. Then we will observe?

Solution

The litmus solution will turn red which indicates the presence of acid
Explanation:

S(s) + O2(g) → SO2(g)

When sulphor is heated in air above reaction takes place and sulphur dioxide is frormed.Sulphur is a non-metal and the oxides of non-metal are acidic in nature. When sulphur dioxide dissolves in water sulphorous acid is formed as per the below equation.

SO2(g) + H2O(l) → H2SO3(aq)

So when it reacts with litmus solution it turns red
