The gynoecium is the female reproductive part of the flower. It is composed of carpels or pistils.
When there is a single carpel in the flower, then the gynoecium is described as monocarpellary.
When more than one carpel is present in the flower, then the gynoecium is called multicarpellary.

If the carpels are fused then the gynoecium is called syncarpous.
