Question

The magnetic field strength at 1, 2 and 3 in the given picture are such that:

  1. Strength at 1 = 2 = 3

  2. Strength at 1 > 3 > 2

  3. Strength at 1 > 2 > 3

  4. Strength at 3 > 2 > 1

Solution

The correct option is C

Strength at 1 > 2 > 3

Closer is the  magnetic field lines, stronger will be the magnetic field. In the figure, the magnetic field lines are closest to each other at 1 than at point 2 and 3. And magnetic field lines are wider at point 3 than point 2. Hence magnetic field strength is higher at point 2 than point 3. Near the head of a bar magnet, magnetic fields are stronger and as we move away from it, the magnetic field strength decreases.
