Question

The pH of a buffer solution containing 0.1 M CH3COOH and 0.1 M CH3COONa is 4.74. What will be the pH if 0.05 mole of HCl is added to one litre of this buffer solution? Ka(CH3COOH)=1.8×105.

Solution

For 0.1 M CH3COOH & 0.1 CH3COONa

pH=pKa+log0.10.1=Pka

PKa=4.74(1)

When 0.05 moles of HCl is added to 1Lit of the solution
CH3COONa+HClCH3COOH+NaCl
Initially 0.1 M0.050.1 M
1lit 1lit
0.1 mole
Finally 0.05 mole 00.15 mole

PHNow=PKa+log[salt][acid]=4.74+log0.050.15=4.74log3=4.27
