Question

The ratio of the roots of the equation ax2+bx+c=0 is same as the ratio of the roots of the equation px2+qx+r=0. If D1 and D2 are the discriminants of ax2+bx+c=0 and px2+qx+r=0 respectively. Find the ratio of D1 and D2.

Solution

Given both equations have same ratio of roots

Roots of 1st equation :b±b24ac2a

Ratio of roots of 1st equation :b+b24acbb24ac

Similarly for 2nd equation we can find ratio of roots. Both have same ratio of roots.

b+b24acbb24ac=q+q24prqq24pr

Adding 1 on both sides :-

1+b+b24acbb24ac=1+q+q24prqq24pr

2bbb24ac=2qqq24pr

2bbD1=2qqD2

2bq+2bD1=2qb+2qD2

D1D2=b2q2
