The intensity or loudness of a sound depends upon the extent to which the sounding body vibrates, i.e., the amplitude of vibration. A sound is louder as the amplitude of vibration is greater, and the intensity decreases as the distance from the source increases. In short, amplitude is a characteristic that says how big the wave is, that is, size of the wave. The amplitude of a wave is measured as the height from the equilibrium point to the highest point of a crest or the depth from the equilibrium point to the lowest point of a trough.
