Question

The sum of two numbers is 15 and the difference of their squares is 15. The difference of the numbers is ___.

Solution

a + b = 15

a^2 - b^2 = 15

we know

a^2 - b^2 = (a+b)(a-b)

(a+b) (a-b) =15

we know a+b =15
to find a-b

15*(a-b) =15

a-b = 15

difference of the numbers = 1
