There are two paths the blood takes through the heart: pulmonary and systemic circuits. Pulmonary circulation involves the heart pumping blood to the lungs. From the right ventricle, the blood is pumped to the lungs, it gets oxygenated there and is returned in the left atrium.

The oxygen-rich blood from the left atrium flows into the left ventricle. Blood is pumped to the rest of the body from the left ventricle by the heart. Cells of our body use up the oxygen from the blood and dump carbon dioxide into it. Such deoxygenated blood is collected in the right atrium which then gets pushed into the right ventricle. This begins the pulmonary circuit again. This repeats continuously throughout our lifetime.
