Three writers from the Bengaluru Division have received the prestigious ‘Jnanapita Award’ given in the field of literature. They are - National Poet Kuvempu whose actual name is K.V.Puttappa, Masthi Venkatesha Iyengar and U.R. Ananthamurthy.
Modern literature has also been enriched by the following writers from this division - D.V.Gundappa, P.Lankesh, Nisar Ahamed, T.P.Kailasam, M.K. Indira, Tarasu, Dr Anupama Niranjana, Siddalingaiah and several others.
Bengaluru is also an important centre of the movie industry. Actors like Dr Rajkumar and Dr Vishnuvardhan played significant roles in the development of Kannada cinema. Actors like Shankarnag, Soundarya and Puneeth Rajkumar were talented artists who contributed immensely to Kannada cinema.
K.C. Reddy, the first Chief Minister of Mysuru state, the second Chief Minister Kengal Hanumanthaiah, another Chief Minister S. Nijalingappa, and several others from the Bengaluru division participated actively in the Freedom struggle.
