Question

There is an air bubble of radius R inside a drop of water of radius 3R. Find the ratio of gauge pressure at B to that at point A.



Solution

Let P1 be the pressure inside the air bubble and P2 be the pressure inside the water drop.

For A : 


Excess pressure for an air bubble inside a water drop
P1P2=2TR  ------(1)

For B :

Excess pressure for a water drop
P2P0=2T3R------(2)
P2=P0+2T3R

(1)  P1=P2+2TR
=P0+2T3R+2TR  (using (2))
=P0+8T3R
P1P0=8T3R------(3)
From (2) and (3)
P2P0P1P0=14=0.25
