The Shiromani Gurudwara Prabandhak Committee was established in 1920 to maintain the religious sanctity of the Gurudwaras. After Independence, Akali Dal became an active political party in Punjab and launched the Punjabi Suba movement. They demanded a separate Punjabi speaking state.
