Question

Three point charges q1=106C,q2=106C and q3=0.5×106C are located in air at the corners of an equilateral triangle of 50 cm side, the magnitude of the force on q3 will be ______ ×103 N.

Solution

The correct option is A 17.97

The arrangement is shown in the figure. The triangle is placed in x-y plane with three corners at 0(0,0,0), Q(0.5,0,0) and P.

The distance PR can be obtained as,

PR=d2(d2)2=3d2

Co-ordinates of P(d2,3d2,0)i.e. (0.25,0.433,0)

force on q3 due to q1 is

F31=q3q14πϵ0R20p¯a0p

where ,
R0p=0.25^ax+0.43^ay+0^az

F31=0.5×106×1064π×8.854×1012×[(0.25)2+(0.433)2]¯R0p|R0p|

=0.01805[(0.25^ax+0.433^ay+0^az)]0.5

=8.99×103^ax+0.01556^ay+0^az N

Force on q3 due to q2 is

¯F32=q3q24πϵ0R20p¯aQp

where ,
¯RQp = (0.250.5)^ax+(0.4330)^ay+0^azN

|¯RQp|=0.25^ax+(0.433)^ay+0^az
|¯RQp| = 0.5

¯F32=0.5×106×(106)4π×8.854×1012×(0.5)2×[0.25^ax+0.433^ay+0^az]0.5

=0.00899^ax0.01556^ay+0^azN
¯F3=¯F31+¯F32
|¯F3|=0.01797N=17.97×103N
