Question

Two lamps , one rated 100W at 220V, and the other 60W at 220V, are connected in parallel to electric mains supply. What current is drawn from the line if the supply voltage is 220V?

Solution

We know that, P=V2R

From the figure,

R1=V21P1=220×220100

R1=484Ω

R2=V21P2=220×22060

R2=806.7Ω

The equivalent resistance in parallel combination,

1Req=1R1+1R2

1Req=1484+1806.7

Req=302.5Ω

The current flowing in the circuit,

I=VReq=220302.5

I=0.7272A
