Two objects both of masses $$100 g$$ are moving along the same line and direction with velocities of $$2\ ms^{-1}$$ and $$1\ ms^{-1}$$, respectively. They collide and after the collision, the first object moves at a velocity of $$1.67\ ms^{-1}$$. Determine the velocity of the second object:

Solution

The correct option is C $$1.33\ m/s$$
Given :  $$m_1=m_2  =0.1$$ kg
Velocities of objects before collision :     $$u_1  = 2$$ m/s             $$u_2  =1$$ m/s
Velocities of objects after collision :     $$v_1  = 1.67$$ m/s             $$v_2  =?$$ 
Conservation of momentum :      $$P_i = P_f$$
$$\therefore$$    $$m_1u_1+m_2u_2=m_1v_1+m_2v_2$$
OR      $$0.1(2)+ 0.1(1) = 0.1(1.67)+0.1v_2$$                     $$\implies v_2 = 1.33$$ m/s
