Question

Two parallel chords of lengths 30 cm and 16 cm are drawn on the opposite sides of the centre of a circle of radius 17 cm. Find the distance between the chords.

Solution

The distance from the center to 30 cm chord is d1 = square root of 17 squared minus open parentheses 30 over 2 close parentheses squared end root = 8 cm.

The distance from the center to 16 cm chord is d2 = square root of 17 squared minus open parentheses 16 over 2 close parentheses squared end root = 15 cm.

Your answer is the sum d1 + d2 = 8 + 15 = 23 cm.
